Plant-Based Foods Are Emerging as a Major Growth Driver in the UAE Food Market

While animal-based products still account for the majority of food spending in the United Arab Emirates, new market research indicates that plant-based foods are gaining momentum. From meat alternatives to dairy-free products, the sector is experiencing strong growth and increasing visibility across retail and foodservice channels.

According to a recent market analysis, the UAE food products market was valued at USD 22 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 38 billion by 2035. While traditional food categories still dominate overall spending, plant-based meat alternatives, dairy-free products, and vegan-certified foods are experiencing particularly strong growth. The report estimates that this segment will expand at an annual rate of approximately 15%, making it the fastest-growing food category in the country.

Why Plant-Based Foods Are Growing

Several factors are contributing to the rising demand for plant-based products across the UAE.

Health-conscious consumers are increasingly looking for alternatives that align with their wellness goals. At the same time, growing awareness of environmental sustainability is encouraging more people to reduce their reliance on animal products. The UAE's diverse population, which includes residents from more than 200 nationalities, is also helping to drive demand for a wider range of dietary options, including vegan foods.

The report notes that retailers and foodservice operators are responding to these shifts by expanding their plant-based offerings, while restaurants are increasingly introducing vegan and flexitarian menu options.

Retailers Are Expanding Vegan Choices

The growing visibility of vegan products is no longer limited to specialist stores.

Major retailers such as Carrefour, LuLu Hypermarket, and Spinneys are dedicating more shelf space to alternative proteins and plant-based foods. As consumer interest continues to grow, vegan products are becoming easier to find and more accessible to mainstream shoppers.

This increasing availability is important because accessibility often plays a key role in dietary change. When consumers can easily find plant-based alternatives during their regular shopping trips, trying vegan products becomes a practical and convenient choice rather than a challenge.

Food-Tech Innovation Is Supporting the Transition

The UAE is also investing heavily in food innovation.

Initiatives such as Dubai Food Tech Valley are supporting developments in alternative proteins, precision fermentation, and vertical farming. According to the report, government-backed programmes are helping expand the ecosystem for food-tech businesses while encouraging international companies to establish operations in the UAE.

Although many of these innovations are still developing, they have the potential to increase the availability and affordability of sustainable food products in the years ahead.

The significance of this market analysis lies not in the current market share of plant-based foods, but in the direction of travel. While animal-based products still account for the majority of food expenditure in the UAE, representing approximately 75% of total food spending, plant-based foods are emerging as the market's fastest-growing segment. Expanding consumer interest in health, sustainability, and alternative proteins is creating new opportunities for plant-based products, signalling a gradual shift in consumer preferences and a growing role for vegan options in the region's evolving food landscape.

The UAE's food sector is expected to continue expanding over the next decade, driven by population growth, tourism, digital commerce, and continued investment in food innovation. Within that broader growth story, plant-based foods are emerging as one of the most promising areas of development.
