Serving Hope, Spreading Awareness: The Mission of Lebanese Vegans Social Hub
In the heart of Beirut, the Lebanese Vegans Social Hub stands as a pioneering space with a mission that extends far beyond serving food. It exists to inspire change by reimagining local comfort dishes in their vegan versions, while at the same time strengthening the community through education, solidarity, activism, and support for local vegan businesses. The hub champions campaigns for animal liberation and raises awareness about the health consequences of animal‑based diets, showing that plant‑based living is both compassionate and essential for human well‑being. From its earliest days, the hub has combined nourishment with purpose, offering free hot meals and organizing weekly distributions of food and clothing to vulnerable communities, including families displaced by crisis. Across its café, terrace, and community spaces, food, advocacy, and solidarity come together to create a place where awareness grows, businesses thrive, and hope is shared.
The Lebanese Vegans Social Hub was established in summer 2020, in the immediate aftermath of the Beirut port explosion. At a time when thousands were displaced and communities were struggling, Georges Hayek, founder of the Lebanese Vegans NGO, offered his family’s large house to become the hub’s home. With the support of animal rights educator Seb Alex, the residence was transformed into a center for preparing and distributing plant‑based meals to affected families, offering both urgent relief and a compassionate vision for rebuilding through solidarity and justice.
Built in 1885, the house carries deep historical meaning. It was once the Hayek family home, where Father Joseph Hayek lived before being executed in 1915 for advocating Lebanon’s independence. Today, the presence of his statue on the terrace serves as a reminder that the struggle for justice, whether for people or animals, is rooted in Lebanon’s history of resilience.
By opening this historic residence, Georges Hayek and Seb Alex gave rise to the first dedicated vegan hub in the Middle East, ensuring it would be more than a café. It became a place where food, activism, and community converge.
Stepping inside, visitors are welcomed by the charm of a historic Lebanese house, with high ceilings and vintage architectural details that carry the weight of history. Greenery softens the space, natural light filters through the old windows, and the aroma of freshly prepared vegan shawarma and taouk fills both the café and terrace.
The menu reimagines Lebanese comfort dishes in plant‑based form. Shawarma, taouk, Sujuk, Escalope, Cheese burger, Kafta, Fish n’ ships, Manti, Shish Barak, Kibbeh Bi Laban, and more.
Every dish proves that cruelty‑free food can be just as satisfying as traditional favorites.
For those who prefer enjoying these meals at home, the entire menu is available through Toters, Lebanon’s leading delivery app, ensuring that vegan comfort food is accessible far beyond the hub’s spaces.
Beyond the café, the boutique extends the hub’s mission into everyday life. Freezers are stocked with frozen ready vegan meats, cheeses, and labneh, allowing visitors to recreate the café experience at home. Shelves display activist merchandise, eco‑friendly lifestyle items, and local vegan snacks.
In a small dining room, transformed into a cozy library, visitors can browse books on veganism and animal rights while enjoying a calm atmosphere. This inviting corner also serves as a quiet workspace, offering a place for reading, writing, or working in peace. Here, dining, knowledge, and activism come together, making the hub not only a café but also a thoughtful environment for reflection and productivity..
The hub is also a center for education and community. Its co‑working area provides a space for collaboration, while the auditorium and terrace host talks, screenings, and activist events.
Events at the hub strengthen its mission. From lectures and workshops to festive gatherings such as the Vegan Christmas Market, the hub occasionally opens its café and terrace to the public with free Beyond Burgers and nuggets, alongside educational talks, live music, and networking.
These events create a sense of community, inspire newcomers to explore vegan living, and ensure that everyone, regardless of background, can experience plant‑based food and advocacy in action. This combination of food, resources, and activism makes the hub unique in the region, serving as both a social café and a movement headquarters.
One of the most impactful aspects of the hub is its relief program. In the aftermath of the port explosion, Lebanese Vegans committed to distributing plant‑based meals and clothes on a weekly basis to vulnerable communities across Beirut. Free hot meals are offered daily to anyone who walks in, reinforcing the belief that vegan food should be accessible to all. This program has reached families struggling with poverty, individuals displaced by crisis, and communities in need. It became a relief during times of uncertainty, when solidarity and compassion were most needed.
Every purchase directly supports the hub’s campaigns
Proceeds from the café and boutique fund a wide range of animal rights campaigns, from the food relief program, billboards, TV programs, and radio ads to live cooking demonstrations.
By combining activism with compassion, the hub bridges two struggles: the fight for animal liberation and the effort to support human communities in times of need.
Open from Monday to Saturday, between noon and nine at night, the Lebanese Vegans Social Hub welcomes everyone who wants to experience vegan food, learn more about animal rights, or simply enjoy a meal in a space filled with warmth and purpose. Located in Beirut, it can be reached at +961 70 624329 or +961 1 488 808, and for those who prefer to dine at home, the full menu is also available through Toters, Lebanon’s leading delivery app.
The Lebanese Vegans Social Hub is more than a café. It is a movement born from tragedy, rooted in history, and strengthened by the vision of activists like Georges Hayek and Seb Alex. Dedicated to building a compassionate future, the hub offers delicious vegan comfort food, a boutique with frozen products for home use, activist merchandise and lifestyle items, a small library of books, and welcoming café and terrace spaces. Beyond food, it has grown into a community center; hosting occasional workshops, lectures, and activist events that bring people together to learn, share, and act.
